Description

This Sweet Potato Pie with Condensed Milk is a classic Southern dessert featuring a creamy and smooth filling made from mashed sweet potatoes, sweetened condensed milk, and warm spices, all baked in a flaky pie crust. It offers a comforting blend of sweetness and spice, perfect for holiday gatherings or any cozy occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Filling

  • 2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 large potatoes)
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Pie Crust

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Prepare sweet potatoes: Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly, peel them, and cut into chunks to speed up cooking.
  3. Boil sweet potatoes: Boil the sweet potato chunks in a large pot of water for 15-20 minutes until soft and tender. Drain and mash them until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  4. Mix filling base: In a large bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk or use a hand mixer to blend until smooth and free of lumps.
  5. Add eggs: Incorporate eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition to achieve a creamy texture.
  6. Add flavorings: Stir in vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until fully combined.
  7. Add melted butter: Pour in melted butter and mix thoroughly to incorporate all ingredients.
  8. Fill the crust: Pour the sweet potato mixture evenly into the unbaked 9-inch pie crust, spreading with the back of a spoon.
  9. Bake the pie: Place the pie on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes until the filling is set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool the pie: Remove from oven and allow the pie to cool on a wire rack at room temperature, helping it to set properly.
  11. Serve: Once cooled, slice and serve. Optionally, add whipped cream as a topping.

Notes

  • Boiling sweet potatoes beforehand ensures a smooth, creamy filling.
  • Do not overmix the batter to prevent toughening of the filling.
  • Use a toothpick test to check for doneness; it should come out clean.
  • Allowing the pie to cool completely helps with slicing and texture.
  • For added flavor, you can sprinkle a little extra cinnamon or nutmeg on top before serving.
