Ingredients
Scale
Shrimp Mixture
- 0.5 lb fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 oz pork fat (or unsalted butter as a lighter substitute)
- 1 egg white
- 2 green onions, finely chopped (or chives as substitute)
- 2 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp fish sauce (or soy sauce for vegetarian version)
- 1 tsp garlic powder (or fresh garlic minced)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 0.5 tsp white pepper
Base and Garnish
- White bread slices (gluten-free bread can be used)
- Sesame seeds (optional, for sprinkling)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil recommended)
Instructions
- Prepare the shrimp mixture: Finely chop or pulse the fresh shrimp in a food processor until it forms a coarse paste. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped shrimp paste with pork fat, egg white, green onions, cornstarch, fish sauce, garlic powder, sugar, sesame oil, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture becomes sticky and spreadable.
- Assemble the shrimp toast: Remove crusts from the white bread slices if desired. Spread an even layer of the shrimp mixture onto one side of each bread slice, about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle the top generously with sesame seeds for an added crunchy texture and nutty flavor.
- Fry the shrimp toast: Heat oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat (approx. 350°F or 175°C). Carefully place the shrimp-topped bread slices into the hot oil, shrimp side down first. Fry until the shrimp is golden brown and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Then flip and fry the bread side until crisp and golden, another 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve: Cut each shrimp toast slice diagonally for easy serving. Serve warm as an appetizer or snack with dipping sauce if desired.
Notes
- Fresh shrimp provides the best flavor but frozen shrimp can be used if thawed properly.
- If pork fat is not available, unsalted butter can be substituted for a lighter taste.
- For a vegetarian version, swap shrimp with finely chopped mushrooms and use soy sauce instead of fish sauce.
- Gluten-free bread can be used for those with gluten sensitivity.
- Ensure oil temperature is well maintained for crispy shrimp toast without absorbing excess oil.
- Adjust seasoning according to taste preferences, especially the amount of sugar and fish sauce.
